"I learned it from watching the movies" may seem like a humorous statement, but Hollywood has been imparting life lessons since its early days. From epic tales of warriors fighting tooth-and-nail to throw off the chains of oppression to stories of individuals taking smaller but emotionally monumental steps to better their own existences, the quest for the good life has propelled many a movie hero forward.
By now, you have likely seen Guardians of the Galaxy. If you have not, it is likely that you have been bombarded with trailers and commercials for Marvel’s sci-fi adventure. The film’s surprisingly strong opening weekend, which set an August record, was helped by its irreverent ads that championed the quirky charms of the main characters more than it promised explosive action. Central to the endearing appeal of these ads was Blue Swede’s ear-wormy cover of the rock song Hooked on a Feeling, a retro touch that added some much-needed personality to what could have been a generic two-minute trailer.
The tragic passing of Robin Williams is still reverberating around the world, with the initial shock dissolving to a placid acceptance. It has forced the film community to take stock of a career that no one was ready to say goodbye to. Many people grew up on Williams’ films, with his many celebrated roles providing comfort, humor, sincerity, and humanity. He left a mark on every film he participated in, and elevated both the character and the movie with his charisma and personality.
With all of the noticeable evolution in game mechanics and presentation, we've also started to see more and more examples of something that most people would never consider a possibility in games back in the 70s: Genuine emotion. So, with that in mind, here are seven video games that struck a chord with the WGTC staff and plucked more than a few heartstrings in the process.
