Following on from his shocking arrest this past spring, Jonathan Majors is due to go to trial over domestic violence charges later this summer.
The 33-year-old actor made his first appearance in court today, albeit briefly, in Manhattan to be informed that his trial had been scheduled for Aug. 3 (via Deadline). If found guilty, Majors — who looked set to be cemented as Hollywood’s next superstar earlier this year after back-to-back blockbuster appearances in both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III — could spend up to a year in jail.
On March 25, Majors was arrested in New York under charges of strangulation, harassment, and assault. These allegations were made by the victim herself, Majors’ then-girlfriend, although texts shared by Majors’ legal team supposedly show the woman recanting her accusations. Nevertheless, other women have since come forward with their own assault allegations against the star. Majors’ representatives continue to deny all claims made against him, blasting it as a “with hunt” and indicative of “the racial bias that permeates the criminal justice system.”
In the months since, Majors’ public reputation has taken a considerable hit, with his career also becoming threatened as he has been dropped by his agents and from several upcoming movie roles. At present, however, he remains cast as Marvel’s Kang the Conqueror, with his next appearance due to come in this October’s Loki season two (recorded prior to his legal issues). It has been speculated that Marvel is waiting until the outcome of his trial to make a decision on his MCU future.
