Chief among those is the outpost from Ubisoft’s Far Cry series. As the latest, bat-shit insane trailer attests, the studio is populating its vivid rendition of the Wasteland with a number of strongholds that the Road Warrior can ransack for weapons and other resources. Stumbling upon these camps will also mean running into a variety of colorful characters, including the likes of Jeet, Gutgash, Pink Eye and Deep Friah – because when the pillars of society have crumbled, who gives a shit about your name?

Forming alliances with these personas will aid you on your quest in Mad Max, as you look to topple the malevolent tyrant, Scrotus. Placing a heavy emphasis on car customization, there are also nods to Warner’s critically-adorned Fury Road, including the vibrant red and yellow smoke bombs and the grimy, unforgiving nature of Miller’s universe. If Avalanche’s licensed title can capture even a fraction of the film’s chaotic brilliance, then surely the studio’s Wasteland is one worth exploring.

Avalanche’s Mad Max will bring the apocalypse to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on September 1.

Mad Max delivers open world gameplay in a post-apocalyptic setting where cars are the key to survival. Developed by Avalanche Studios, gamers become Mad Max, a lone warrior who must fight to stay alive in The Wasteland, using vicious on-ground and vehicular combat against savage bandits. Following the theft of his iconic Interceptor, Max must align himself with a gifted, but peculiar, mechanic named Chumbucket and others to build the ultimate war vehicle as he works to escape from the dangerous Wasteland.
