Sony’s PlayStation event last night brought with it the announcement that Sucker Punch Productions has been working on a new PS4 game in the inFAMOUS franchise, titled inFAMOUS: Second Son.

Second Son, takes place seven years after the events in inFAMOUS 2‘s good ending, and therefore features a new protagonist, a new city, and a completely different set of powers. The government has set up the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) in an effort to never repeat the “catastrophic events of Empire City and New Marais”. DUP’s job is to actively hunt down anyone that shows signs of being a “bio-terrorist” in order to protect the rest of humanity.

Players take control of Delsin Rowe, a 24 year-old man who grew up just outside of Seattle. One day Rowe happens upon a fiery bus wreck, and in the process of trying to save the occupants trapped inside he discovers that he has the ability to “direct, manipulate and even transform into… Smoke”. How Rowe obtained these smoke powers is unclear, but now that he has them he finds himself caught in DUP’s bio-terrorist dragnet. The only problem is that he decides “he’s not going to go quietly”.

Similar to the first two games in the series, inFAMOUS: Second Son will also feature multiple paths though the game, and decisions you make impact both gameplay and the story.

According to Sucker Punch, inFAMOUS: Second Son‘s plot will explore more than just the tale of Rowe. The game also looks at our own world where we “are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security”. The key element to Second Son‘s story is said to be the famous quote from Ben Franklin, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Players will have the chance to explore Seattle and many of its familiar landmarks, which have been recreated in “a remarkable level of detail” using the PlayStation 4. To highlight just how powerful the new console will be, Sucker Punch noted that the entire trailer (embedded below) was created in-house using Second Son‘s game engine.
