After a tease by NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon on Friday, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has officially announced when Injustice 2 will launch, revealing that the highly-anticipated sequel will land on May 16, 2017.

Ed Boon, a notorious showman, originally posted the Tweet seen below on Friday.

To most eyes, it seemingly confirmed the May 16 launch date for the sequel. However, if you’ve followed Boon during the production of past NetherRealm Studios’ projects, sometimes things are not as obvious as they appear. Thankfully, Warner Bros. PR quickly came out and confirmed the date.

The follow-up to 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, Injustice 2 was originally announced just prior to E3 2016. While the sequel will retain many of the same gameplay concepts from its predecessor, the title does bring some new features to the game. The biggest addition will be the introduction of the “Gear System,” which allows players to outfit their characters with stat-altering equipment.

Picking up after the events of Gods Among Us, the sequel will once again see the forces of good led by Batman square off against the corrupt Superman and what’s left of his regime. Besides the Caped Crusader and the Man Of Steel, returning faces include Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman, while Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd and Atrocitus spotlight the currently confirmed new additions to the roster.

As a fan of both Injustice and MKX, I’m pretty excited for the sequel. NetherRealm Studios has been steadily improving the quality of their output over the years, and from what I’ve seen so far, I think this will continue that trend. I do wonder if the game will actually release in May 2017, though. Past WBIE published titles such as Mad Max and Batman: Arkham Knight were hit with delays, but hopefully this is one that sticks.
