Sea Of Thieves’ Latest Technical Alpha Update Adds New Islands And Undead Pirates

Sea of Thieves developer Rare has released a video today that goes over the new features recently added to the swashbuckling open-world title’s Technical Alpha test. Update 0.1.1, as it’s so-called, widens the explorable boundaries of the game’s world, affording players the opportunity to discover new islands and outposts with which to offload their plundered loot. Perfect, considering there are now more avenues available to those looking to increase their stash of gold.

As outlined in a previous developer diary, crews can work together in order to seek out and dig up buried treasure, which then needs to be transported back to the cargo hold to ensure its safety. However, there’s now an added layer of danger in the form of various challenges, like stealing another group’s loot and making a “daring getaway.” As so delicately showcased by the video, falling damage is now a very real hazard, so if you’re one of the few lucky enough to have been granted access to the Alpha, don’t expect to jump off a cliff onto the deck of your ship without feeling it from now on.

Besides the above, new PvE hazards in the form of undead skeletal pirates have been sprinkled all over the game world, so you’ll need to watch where you tread when disembarking to explore a new island.

Last we heard, Sea of Thieves is scheduled for release this year on Xbox One and Windows 10, and will be a part of Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program. You can probably expect more news, and hopefully a firm launch window, for Sea of Thieves to be announced at this year’s E3.
