Ubisoft issued a security warning to their customers today informing them that an unnamed website owned by the publisher was “recently” hacked, resulting in the theft of user account data.

According to an email sent out to Ubisoft customers, the unauthorized intruder[s] was able to use the exploited website to successfully gain access to some of the company’s online systems. After an investigation of the incident, Ubisoft determined that “data had been illegally accessed from [their] account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords.” Thankfully, Ubisoft does not store any user payment information, so customer credit/debit card numbers were never in any danger.

The message does not specifically state which systems were hacked, but we are presuming that one of them was the Uplay account database.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” Ubisoft is advising all of their customers to change the password on both their Ubisoft account and any other website or service where they use a similar password.

Ubisoft‘s full email to their customers is posted below.

Dear Member,

We recently found that one of our Web sites was exploited to gain unauthorized access to some of our online systems. We instantly took steps to close off this access, investigate the incident and begin restoring the integrity of any compromised systems.

During this process, we learned that data had been illegally accessed from our account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords. Please note that no personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your debit/credit card information was safe from this intrusion.

As a result, we are recommending that you change the password for your account…

Out of an abundance of caution, we also recommend that you change your password on any other Web site or service where you use the same or a similar password.

We sincerely apologize to all of you for the inconvenience. Please rest assured that your security remains our priority.
