5 Insane Horror Films That Will Make You Laugh

There's nothing quite like comedy-horrors. These are the kind of films that deliriously mash together two genres that belong on separate ends of the film spectrum. Yet strangely, when they're done right, these amalgamation movies can actually be a hell of a lot of fun. When it comes to this nutty genre, it might be difficult to ever surpass Shaun of the Dead - a movie which drew on some of the greater laugh-splatter movies of earlier times like Evil Dead 2 and subsequently set the bar insurmountably high. That being said, the following 5 movies have their own utterly unique blend of comic and shock value, and whilst every one of them is undeniably insane, there is enough about them to warrant a recommendation for anyone who enjoys horror-comedy movies, and also perhaps for anyone who doesn't ordinarily consider these gory-goofball pieces to be their cup of tea. Without further ado, here are five insane horror films that will definitely have you laughing. 5) Bad Milo! How to explain Bad Milo! without sounding perverse? There probably isn't a way to manage it, so putting it bluntly might be the best course of action. Ken Marino stars as a middle-aged man suffering from the pangs of a mid-life crisis. Pushing his anger back in on himself as his unbearable boss (played by Patrick Warburton) repeatedly pushes his buttons, Marino's stress eventually manifests itself into a fearsome creature that exits via his rectum and violently attacks those responsible for making his life a misery. For the most part, the wrinkled alien thing (nicknamed Milo by his host) bobs along feral-faced with a hiss and a growl, but from time to time it occasionally resembles something strangely cute and endearing when his set of blood-stained incisors are buried away. For what it is (and I'm still not entirely sure exactly what that might be) Bad Milo! is actually kind of inspired. It hops between B-Movie, Z-Movie and Midnight Movie territory, gleefully kicking buckets of blood around the screen and sometimes actually hitting some nice comedic notes. To say it's not for everyone doesn't quite sum it up, but how on earth do you summarize Bad Milo!? One thing's for sure, proctologists will be appalled. 4) John Dies At The End Lifted from David Wong's novel of the same name, John Dies At The End is as deliriously nutty and bizarre as its overt title suggests. The lead character in Don Coscarelli's movie adaptation is named after the original writer himself. Sitting opposite a reporter in a diner (played by the dependably terrific Paul Giamatti), David dictates tales of supernaturalism and how he and his friend were once recruited to save a planet. As David recalls the absurd and confused quest, we're exposed to frame after frame of head-slapping insanity. This includes, and is not limited to, a monster made of frozen meat, a dog called Bark Lee, a drug called Soy Sauce, women bearing gold masks, a shitload of blood and a blood-curdling minion called "shitload." Not even the reporter played by Giamatti is as ordinary as he first appears to be. Created on a spectacularly low budget and raking in even less in initial income, John Dies At The End is the very definition of a low-budget cult horror-comedy. It's guaranteed to give you the same kind of fuzzy, weird headache that sweaty, dirty techno clubs give to each of their guests as they stroll in through the entrance. Some will understandably despise it; at a loss to explain how anyone could enjoy something so delirious, nonsensical and brash. Others, however, will find much enjoyment in the movie's raging, foul absurdity, regarding their fuzzy heads as a symptom of an unrivalled, weird, fun experience. 3) The Day Of The Beast A lesser-known gem of the horror-comedy genre given its Spanish origins, El Dia De La Bestia - or Day of the Beast in English - is a raucous descent into demonic territory that casts an absurd comic shadow. Alex de la Iglesia's movie portrays a Priest named Father Ángel Berriartúa, a Roman Catholic who has deciphered that the Anti-Christ is due to be born in Madrid on Christmas Day. In order to get close to Satan, he goes about committing as many despicable and foul deeds as he possibly can, ranging from toppling over a random bystander stood aloft on a ladder all the way to bloody murder. The Priest recruits the help of heavy metal aficionado Jose Maria and TV psychic Professor Cavan to help him track down the Devil before it's too late, and together the three tear their way through the city in an attempt to stop the birth of the Anti-Christ that will surely take down the world. It's a mind-boggling movie that's actually a sneaky piece of Spanish social satire at its core, with enough digs in the ribs to suggest that the Devil is in fact the city of Madrid itself. But what's so good about Day of the Beast is how you can enjoy it on a purely aesethic level too - from Father Berriartua tottering his way through a thrashing metal nightclub to the trio falling into a crazy acid trip. It's incredibly dark from start to finish, but the whole thing is so maniacally absurd that you can't help but find yourself sniggering as it proceeds to get unabashedly weirder with every passing frame. 2) Black Sheep On the list of barnyard animals harboring masked malicious potential, sheep are probably way, way down toward the bottom. Animal Farm gave us every right to regard pigs with suspicion, and the mad cow disease epidemic made certain people feel particularly uneasy around cattle, but who in their right mind has ever been scared of the sight of a fluffy sheep bounding around in a nearby field? Black Sheep does its best to put sheep top of the leaderboard for World's Scariest Barnyard Animal. Coming straight out of New Zealand, director Jonathan King actually does something quite smart by transforming the country's most recognizable creature into something with the potential to cause mass murder. Sheep outnumber human beings three to one in New Zealand, and if anything like Black Sheep were to happen in real life, it's pretty safe to say that the entire country would be doomed. The plot consists of an experimental scientist named Angus who is examining the effects of a formula that turns sheep into carnivores. Naturally, everything that could go wrong does go wrong and the virus spreads, causing the sheep to go berserk and mutate into growling, slobbering demon beasts that feast on human flesh. Packed with some gloriously campy kills that involve an alarming amount of stretched limbs and saliva, Black Sheep might just be ridiculous and gory enough to be win you over if you like a slice of absurd comedy with your horror movies. 1) Tucker & Dale vs. Evil Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is all about what can happen when you're naive enough to judge a book by its cover. Indeed, it'd be pretty easy to immediately write off Eli Craig's movie based on its strange appearance and unappealing image, and that's exactly what the characters within the film do too. A bunch of beer-swilling teens out for a fun-filled camping trip in the woods encounter the titular duo at a gas station, and alarmed by their grizzly, slack-jawed appearance, promptly hop into their car and drive away. What Craig's movie so intelligently does is manipulate the typical genre cliches of the lost-in-the-woods horror movie, and point an outstretched finger towards the stupidity of so many of these types of films. In reality, Tucker and Dale are actually warm, kind, and genial hillbillies, but given how horror films have so often told us that truck-driving, beard-bearing, cabin-dwelling men are inbred masochists whose sole purpose in life is to torture anyone who unwittingly stumbles into their region, the teens in this movie think that, too. In a bitter twist of irony, Tucker and Dale's clumsy attempts to be hospitable lead to several of the youths disappearing, resulting in a hilarious horror-comedy that actually has much more of a of a brain than the serious films that inspired it.
