6 Disturbing Portrayals Of Satan In Film

If I were to bring up the devil to you, how would you envision it? Would you imagine a creature, bent at the spine and fiery red with a forked tongue? Would you imagine some massive, hulking beast, dwelling in a boiling pit of human souls, gorging himself on them and shitting them out only to eat them again? Or maybe you would see Satan as the scariest thing of all: human. Maybe you just imagine the devil as one of us, walking among us, laughing that we don't know he or she is there. Or maybe you are one of those people who just laugh at the thought of imaginary deities that are created to keep us in line.

Robert De Niro In Angel Heart

Devil-Angel-Heart

I remember seeing Angel Heart LONG before I should have seen a movie that twisted (I was probably 12), and many aspects of the film stuck with me. It tells the chilling story of a man who crosses paths with Satan and gets manipulated in the process (that man being an extra greasy, but pre-plastic surgery Mickey Rourke).

This is the movie that was famous for receiving an X rating because of the incredibly graphic sex scenes between Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet, who was a fucking Cosby Kid at the time (meaning she was on The Cosby Show during the height of its fame and went off and rebelled against it by doing this movie). While I wont spoil much about the movie (it’s got some Oldboy-level twists and turns in there) I will tell you this: De Niro’s version of Satan is pretty amazing.

He carries a cane, is well-spoken and well-dressed, and has long-ass nails. There is an air of mystery to him, but there is also an underlying feeling that this man is capable of some very bad stuff, though you do not know what until much later in the movie.

Overall, it’s a great performance by a great actor who was very much at the top of his game when he made Angel Heart.
