7 Reasons That Rogue One Could Be The Best Star Wars Film Ever

With all of the newly announced entries into the Star Wars universe beginning to take shape, only one of them stands out as different from the others, and actually seems to warrant fan's attention. That film is Star Wars: Rogue One, a "heist" film that will revolve around a rag-tag group of Rebel soldiers who are tasked with stealing the blueprints of the Empire's disastrous planet destroying Deathstar. The cast of characters will be new for the film universe, and far more diverse than any other Star Wars movie sans-Force Awakens. Just look at who's in it: You've got Felicity Jones as the leader of "things," Forest Whitaker sporting the 'Forest Whitaker Eye,' Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Wen Jiang, Johnathan Aris, Mads Mikkelsen as 'Hannibal the Fannibal,' and Ben Mendelsohn as 'That Guy Killed by Bane.' But what exactly are the reasons behind this film shaping up to be truly magnificent? Read on to find out. 7) It's A New/Interesting Story For The Star Wars Universe Rogue One is a creative concept for a Star Wars film when you sit down and think about it. A heist movie set in the Star Wars universe sounds bonkers from the get-go. That's as interesting a concept as Ant-Man was as a heist film for the Marvel Universe. And with the news that Darth Vader will make an appearance in Rogue One, what more can you ask for? Seeing how we know that in Star Wars: A New Hope the Deathstar was destroyed by Luke Skywalker when he used the blueprints for the metal behemoth, it'll be cool to see that all tied into Rogue One. Who knows, maybe at the end of the film we'll get a shot of Luke getting his ship ready to head-out and destroy the Deathstar, which would THEN tie-into the space fight from A New Hope (#ItsAllConnected). This film, however, is more of a one-off story if you were to ask me. There would be no need or want for a sequel to it, and if Disney were to make a follow-up, I feel like it'd ruin the first film, simply because it would no longer feel unique in its own way. Here's to hoping Rogue One stays Rogue One, and not Rogue Two. 6) It'll Feature A Talented Actress As The Lead Star It's great that the Star Wars film universe is becoming so diverse, allowing for different people to be attracted to these movies. With the Force Awakens we'll see a film led by a black actor, and with Rogue One we'll see a film lead by a woman. Felicity Jones, no less. Plus, instead of following the usual formula where the woman is just one member on a team of colorful characters, she will actually be the team's leader here. It will be interesting to see what her character stands for as well, as several reports claim that she'll be the daughter of one Boba Fett. If that's the case, it could create a great narrative for the writers to explore. She can either side by her father and turn on her team and the Rebel cause, or stand against him. Also, I'm curious if Jones will pop up elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, like in the Han Solo film for example. Perhaps even as one of Han's partners on a mission? Now that's something I'd love to see. 5) It's Giving A Bunch Of Up-And-Coming Actors A Chance To Make It Big One thing I love about the cast of Rogue One is how diverse it is in terms of known and slightly unknown actors. You'll look at it and say, "Oh hey, Forest Whitaker is in this. That's pretty cool." And then you'll look at someone like Riz Ahmed and think, "I haven't really seen him in anything." For those that don't know, Ahmed actually had a pretty great role in Nightcrawler alongside Jake Gyllenhal, which is one of my favorite films to date. So I'm incredibly happy to see that he's getting more exposure. To me, this shows that not every studio is looking to only cast relatively known actors and actresses in leading roles for feature films. Rogue One's casting shows that they are willing to give unknown talent a chance to make a name for themselves in Hollywood, which I'm definitely a fan of. My hope is that we'll actually get to see the characters from Rogue One pop up in other Star Wars films down the line, giving even more opportunities to these actors to leave their mark in a major franchise. 4) No Capes! So far, from the information we've heard about the film, it's safe to assume that there will not be any Jedi power-players involved with the plot or characters, and that's a great thing. Why do I say that? Because we've had several Star Wars films that revolve around freaks of nature who have telekinetic powers and wield hard light swords that could cut through the hull of a vacation cruise ship. That stuff is cool, don't get me wrong, but let's see something different. Rogue One is setting itself apart from the standard Star Wars archetype right from the get-go just by its plot alone. It's time for some blasters and burnt flesh instead of lightsabers and lungs without oxygen in them (you know, the force choke thing...) 3) Hit Us With That Old-School While I'm all for expanding the Star Wars universe, like the majority of people are, I'm very interested to see us travel back to the time frame of A New Hope, except from a different perspective of everything that shook down after Luke Skywalker got his grubby little fingers on a weapon of destruction. What was the Rebel cause like during that time period? What did Rebel soldiers think of the Jedi order? These are just a few of the questions that I would love for Rogue One to answer once it comes out. And I'm betting that it will. 2) A Gritty Star Wars Film Is Quite Interesting I honestly hope that Rogue One will be drastically different tone wise to the Star Wars films that have lead up to it. What I primarily mean is I'd like the film to be The Dirty Dozen meets intergalactic warfare/espionage. I'd like it to be the chance for Disney to explore the rather dark and slightly depressing side of the war between the Empire and Rebel Cause. This is being stated not because I have an issue with the other Star Wars films, but only because for the most part, they don't show that the aspect of war and what war can do to people, especially a war that takes place in another galaxy and features soldiers using blaster rifles. Rogue One, however, looks like it will show audiences exactly that, and I can't wait. I'm also hoping that Rogue One will pave the way for other Star Wars films to go a bit darker. Can you imagine if we got a Star Wars movie revolving around a cluster of Storm Troopers in the form of Saving Private Ryan? 1) You Can't Go Wrong With More Of What People Love The general consensus for anything Star Wars related is that everybody and their mother absolutely loves it. The films are astonishingly successful and The Force Awakens is tracking to be quite the box office behemoth once it's released. Rogue One is another entry into the Star Wars universe that should easily make some good cash. No one necessarily asked for it, but since it's here, why not entertain the thought? Of course, anything could happen and the film could turn to garbage, but as of now, we're pretty freaking excited for Star Wars: Rogue One, and you should be too.
