Though a certain other Benedict will take top billing in Scott Derrickson’s mystical origins story come November, Benedict Wong – star of Prometheus and The Martian – has been dropping hints regarding his own Doctor Strange character, and just how he differs from the original comics.

Set to play the part of Wong (the character), the actor was quizzed about his upcoming MCU role during an interview with Den of Geek, where he revealed how Marvel is primed to steer his sorcerer “in a different direction.”

In fact, unlike the “tea-making manservant” found in the Doctor Strange comics, it seems as though Wong will have a much more hands-on approach as right-hand man to the Sorcerer Supreme.

Per Den of Geek:

“I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant. We’re heading in a different direction,” the actor says. “There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange actually, he’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”

Benedict Cumberbatch will weave his magic as the Sorcerer Supreme when Doctor Strange is summoned into theaters in time for November 4. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen also star, and it seems we have finally zeroed in on the identity of the latter.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
