Wait, is that Michael Keaton being pursued by a dude dressed like a bird? Yes. It is. These set photos from the actor’s latest film, Birdman, are in equal measures downright bizarre and utterly intriguing.

Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s latest film is cut from a different cloth compared to his previous work. The director has established a name on weighty adult dramas like Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful. So, what the dilly dally heck is this Birdman all about then?

A major change in content for the Mexican helmer, the story follows Michael Keaton who plays actor Riggan Thomson. With his glory years playing a superhero behind him, he joins the cast of a Broadway production. The path to reigniting one’s former successes never does run smooth, and he soon comes to loggerheads with the actor in the lead.

From these latest photos, it looks like Thomson’s previous superhero identity is on hand. Could he be dishing out advice to the actor a la Elvis to Clarence in True Romance? Or is he lingering behind him so he can whisper a continual audio commentary? Have a look at at the new photos below and see for yourself.

Doesn’t sound quite like a project Inarritu would be up for, but it’s always exciting when filmmakers branch out into new genres. Besides, he’s surrounded himself by an accomplished cast to bring the Birdman to life. Joining Keaton are Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan.

There’s bound to be fun poked at Keaton’s previous superhero persona. Before The Dark Knight was a glint in Christian Bale’s eye, Keaton donned the Batsuit for Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman.

Birdman is currently shooting and will be released sometime in 2014.
