Karen Cleveland’s upcoming CIA-centric novel, Need to Know, is yet to hit store shelves and already, Universal has swooped to acquire rights for an adaptation.

Deadline has the scoop, confirming that Max Mad: Fury Road alum Charlize Theron has signed on to produce and headline the pic as a talented CIA analyst. Juggling her time at the agency with life at home, Theron’s wife and mother then stumbles upon a “shocking discovery” while combing through CIA files in the hope of unmasking a Russian sleeper cell in the U.S. – a discovery that in turn threatens her job, her family and her life. Corruption? A web of conspiracy that stretches all the way to the top, perhaps?

Whatever the outcome of Cleveland’s soon-to-be-published novel, Need to Know presents Theron with plenty of dramatic material to sink her teeth into, as the former Mad Max star looks to trade the Wasteland for a pulse-pounding thriller in the vein of, say, Jack Ryan. That’s not to say Theron’s time in George Miller’s apocalyptic franchise is over, given that there have been rumblings of both a Fury Road sequel and a spinoff solely devoted to her ferocious Furiosa. Remaining in the realm of tentpole franchises, Charlize Theron is also one of the many newcomers on board for The Fate of the Furious, another Universal joint that will seemingly go down as the longest entry in the street racing series to date when F. Gary Gray’s sequel opens on April 14th.

Need to Know is, at the time of writing, still searching for a publisher and release date, but rest assured, the movie adaptation is officially on the way. Also on the docket for Theron is a trip to The Coldest City with director David Leitch (Deadpool 2).
