Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme flaunts his time-bending abilities in the magical new TV spot for Doctor Strange.
First released via Marvel’s Twitter account with the caption “,,puᴉɯ ɹnoʎ puɐdxǝ puɐ ɥɔʇɐM ˙˙˙sʞɹoʍ plɹoʍ ǝɥʇ ʍoɥ ʍouʞ noʎ ʞuᴉɥʇ no⅄,” this is arguably one of the most surreal promos for Scott Derrickson’s standalone pic to date, showcasing Strange calling upon his trusty Eye of Agamotto – a weapon of wisdom if ever there was one – to manipulate time itself, stopping Mads Mikklesen’s evil, beady-eyed nemesis Kaecilius not a moment too soon before flinging him backwards without so much as breaking a sweat.
He’ll be a fine addition to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when the time comes, then. Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War has been aligned for release in the summer of 2018, but if early reports hold true, Doctor Strange may well pop up in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, billed as a galactic primer for the Avengers’ full-blown assault on Thanos.
We’ll be keeping track of that one but for now, Benedict Cumberbatch’s induction as Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme awaits. He’ll be joined in the magical feature by Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amy Landecker, Scott Adkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Benedict Wong, while Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One caps off the starry ensemble.
Doctor Strange is slated to arrive on November 4. It’s the final superhero tentpole of 2016 and, by all accounts, looks set to close the book on the calendar year in style. Whether the actual story of Derrickson’s feature can possibly match the mind-bending spectacle is another question.
