Soon to round up the Four Horsemen in crime caper sequel Now You See Me 2, director Jon M. Chu has been keeping very busy indeed now that Lionsgate is reportedly keen to push on with a third installment of the clandestine franchise in the not-s0-distant future.

At least for now, that’s a stage act that Chu is set to orchestrate from behind the lens, but such a stacked schedule has resulted in his ’90s movie Can’t Touch This tumbling onto the director’s back-burner. First announced in 2014, Chu was all but set to go old school with the high school dance flick, tapping into his experience on the Step Up franchise in the process.

But as Chu exclusively revealed to We Got This Covered, Focus Features may be eyeing another filmmaker to come in and take the reins, with Rick Famuyiwa’s (Talk to Me, Dope) name being tossed into the hat.

WGTC: “Is Can’t Touch This completely on the back-burner at this point?”

Jon: “No, not totally. It just depends if I’m doing it or not. I’ve been wanting to, but haven’t had that time in my schedule. At this point we’re in that zone of – well, I can’t say much about it, but it is still moving forward, and we may have another filmmaker coming in to actually direct it, but I’ll still be involved. It’s a really fun world, a fun script, it’s the right time. The reaction I got from it’s announcement was overwhelming.”

WGTC: “So who would your dream director be here?”

Jon: “For Can’t Touch This? Who do you see?”

WGTC: “After seeing DOPE, Rick Famuyiwa.”

Jon: “I think you might be right. I don’t want to say anything out loud, but we’re definitely in that realm. Someone like that would kill it.”

While it’s reassuring to note that Can’t Touch This is alive and well, until Jon M. Chu and the studio zero in on a new director, there’s not much more to report.
