The first of what will surely be many superhero team-up films, The Avengers paved the way for all kinds of crossovers and mashups within the genre. Joss Whedon's deft handling of the larger than life superheroes meant that what many people thought to be impossible had actually been pulled off rather remarkably, proving that the concept of a shared, cinematic universe could indeed be done in Hollywood.

The first of which landed online today, a few days ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl — an event that will no doubt produce its fair share of new trailers — reunites Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they lock horns with the villainous Ultron. Returning for Joss Whedon’s sequel are Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson.

Given that Age of Ultron is tasked with transitioning the MCU from Phase Two to Phase Three, fans can also expect to see a handful of newcomers such as Pietro and Wanda Maximoff — played here by Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, respectively — not to mention Paul Bettany’s revamped role as The Vision.

Earlier this week we learned that Avengers: Age of Ultron could serve as the final Marvel film that Whedon directs, setting up the possibility of Joe and Anthony Russo taking up the mantle before the arrival of the two-part Infinity War in a few years time. If that happens to be the case, then the fan favourite director will no doubt be hoping to bow out in style.

Mark the date, folks, for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will go toe-to-toe with James Spader titular, power-hungry AI when Avengers: Age of Ultron lands on May 1, 2015.

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
