It’s been confirmed for a while now that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, but it doesn’t sound like we should expect them to receive quite as much of the spotlight as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will. That makes a fair bit of sense all things considered, but may still disappoint fans who were hoping that this movie and its currently untitled sequel will essentially be a huge team-up between the two groups.
Here’s what Avengers: Infinity War producer James Gunn had to say about the role of the Guardians in a recent interview to promote The Belko Experiment:
“You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”
The Guardians have knowledge of the Infinity Stones and Drax fancies getting his hands on Thanos, so them showing up in Infinity War is definitely expected. And while the battle to save Earth really comes down to the Avengers, for a variety of reasons which have been teased since Phase 1, Star-Lord and co. will still likely have more than just a brief cameo in Joe and Anthony Russo’s upcoming blockbuster. However it is they factor into things, we’re definitely excited to see them share the screen with Iron Man, Thor, etc.
Shooting on Infinity War is currently underway, but plot details, as you can imagine, are being kept tightly under wraps. With a release date set for next May, we’ll definitely see something from Avengers: Infinity War before 2017 is up, but we don’t imagine anything substantial will be arriving until Comic-Con this July, at the earliest.
