Internet Sensation Grumpy Cat To Star In Her Own Movie

Inspiration for the next big hit can come from anywhere. Pirates Of The Caribbean was a major ride at four of Walt Disney's themes park before its transformation into a summer blockbuster. Heck, we've even had filmmakers turning to board games as was the case with disaster flick, Battleship. Well, hold onto your butts, because now that internet meme goddess, Grumpy Cat, is the next in line for the big screen treatment.

Inspiration for the next big hit can come from anywhere. Pirates Of The Caribbean was a major ride at four of Walt Disney’s themes park before its transformation into a summer blockbuster. Heck, we’ve even had filmmakers turning to board games as was the case with disaster flick, Battleship. Well, hold onto your butts, because now that internet meme goddess, Grumpy Cat, is the next in line for the big screen treatment.

Bringing her to our screens is Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner and Sean Robins. The company behind Zookeeper, Jack And Jill and Here Comes The Boom think the cat is a prime candidate to fill a gap left in popular culture by Garfield. The family-oriented feature will revolve around Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) and gift her with the ability to speak. Garner told Deadline:

“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy. You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”

The cantankerous kitty from Morristown, Arizona became an internet hit after her owner Tabatha Bundensen posted photos of her on Reddit last year. According to Bundensen, the reason for Tardar’s upturned smile is due to feline dwarfism. With her sour expression a perfect vehicle for witty captions, Grumpy Cat grew in popularity. So much so, she’s even got a manager now. She’s already bagged a lucrative partnership deals with Friskies and has a line of merchandise available at Walmart.

Will the film be a success? Well, there’s already a built in audience flocking to Grumpy Cat’s online presence. Her official Facebook page attracts 2 million views a week. That is of course nothing compared to the official YouTube channel which now has over 20 million views.
