James Gunn admits his interest in a live-action DCU debut that would make Dwayne Johnson’s blood boil

Let's make it happen, just for fun.

Once Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in little over a month, James Gunn will finally be able to focus his full and undivided attention on the DCU, with Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters officially kicking off in the summer of 2025 via the writer and director’s Superman: Legacy.

How much of the old guard is brought along for the ride remains up for debate, but one of the highest-profile names who won’t be part of the equation is Dwayne Johnson. After spending 15 years trying to drag Black Adam out of development hell, the actor and producer could only watch as it flopped at the box office and was almost instantly thrown onto the franchise’s trash pile.

Not only that, but DC League of Super-Pets also came and went without making much of a splash, leaving The Rock with nothing after he headlined two movies released just months apart that both culminated in a post-credits tease of seeing his Man in Black face off opposite Superman.

Ironically, Gunn is a noted fan of Krypto the Superdog – who was voiced by Johnson in Super-Pets – and he admitted to Rolling Stone that he’s not against the idea of bringing the character into live-action.

“I learned so much from making these movies. But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different. I think I would have an interest in a live-action Krypto whether or not I had anything to do with Rocket.”

James Gunn bringing a comic book favorite previously voiced by Dwayne Johnson into the DCU would be cruel, but also kind of funny given how short-lived the latter’s tenure turned out to be. Given his love of bizarre characters, don’t rule it out.
