Superman: Legacy has now officially entered pre-production. Although writer/director James Gunn is currently shooting off around the world to promote his final Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the first of his DC Chapter One: Gods & Monsters slate is already heating up like Krypton before it exploded (what? Still too soon). And while we might have a little while to wait until we find out who our new Man of Steel is, Gunn has confirmed that he’s already narrowed it down to a shortlist of stars.
In response to a fan asking if any actors “stand out” as contenders for the DCU’s Superman, Gunn revealed that, yessiree, he has some “incredible choices” to pick from. With the hunt for the next man to don Kal-El’s tights and cape going so well, Gunn remarked that he’s “incredibly excited, and relieved.”
Now that a shortlist has been compiled, it seems Gunn is nearing the end of his search for Superman, which means time is running out for fans to manifest their dream castings. Sure enough, in the wake of the news, DC die-hards are swarming Twitter with their personal picks to occupy the role. And Jack Black will be glad to know his recent grass-roots campaign for the gig has done its job.
Other fans went for more sensible suggestions that have long been favorite fancasts for Gunn’s Superman. Like Wolfgang Novogratz (The Half of It)…
… Or David Corenswet (Hollywood).
But, you know, Jonah Hill is also right there.
And we can all agree the role is Michael Cera’s to lose.
Could Gunn finally make a 30-year-old near-miss come true by hiring Nicolas Cage? The 59-year-old legend could definitely play Gunn’s twentysomething Supes.
Some junior jokers just want to watch the world burn when Chris Pratt is cast.
Whoever is hired, though, they certainly have big (red) boots to fill.
Superman: Legacy is heading for theaters on July 11.
