Who knew that Kristen Stewart would pull herself up by the bootstraps? Literally. The ex-vamp groupie who came under intense press scrutiny after her private life was made public, seems to be back on track. Since she ended her stint as mopey teen Bella in vampiric dreck Twilight, she’s got her act together. She’s worked with a stub of accomplished directors (Walter Salles (On The Road) and Olivier Assayas (Clouds Of Sils Maria)) and she’s landing rave reviews. For her next project, Camp X-Ray, which debuted at Sundance this year, it looks possible that she’s in line for more of the latter.
Taking on the role of a Guantanamo Bay detention camp guard for first time director Peter Sattler, Stewart’s made quite the impressive leap. Going on the slew of set photos and the trailer released so far, the movie looks set to catapult her further into the leagues of her peers. That being: working on ‘serious’ material to showcase her genuine talent.
The new one-sheet which IFC Films released today is your standard fare. A gigantic Stewart is imposed atop a prison yard, with a distasteful look on her face like she’s chewing a wasp. It’s not out of the ordinary, but it’s probably just to make sure you know THE GIRL FROM TWILIGHT IS IN THIS MOVIE.
Camp X-Ray will be released in theatres on October 17th and land on VOD October 28th.
A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots. But she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. A story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both.
