Kristen Stewart’s career choices are making one fact abundantly clear: she wants to be taken seriously. It’s no wonder that after the melodramatic flimflam of The Twilight Saga that the young thesp’s keen to prove her acting prowess. Her critically-acclaimed turn in Clouds Of Sils Maria is soon to be followed by the Guantanamo Bay drama, Camp X-Ray. Whether you’re a fan or not, you can’t deny she’s underrated. Which is why her next turn in Equals could further solidify her as an awards contender.
The futuristic flick from Like Crazy director Drake Doremus reads like a reinvigorated version of THX-1138 crossed with The Island. Set in a world where emotions have been wiped out, a new strain of human is engineered. Called Equals, this new breed are entirely uncapable of feeling. When Silas (Nicholas Hoult) falls ill to “switched-on syndrome” he begins to experience human emotions for the first time – around Kristen Stewart’s Nia. The pair face the flood of feeling – as seen in the first pic above – while being chased by an evil dictator type, played by Guy Pearce.

A futuristic love story set in a society where emotions have been eradicated. Equals tells the story of Silas (Hoult), who lives in a future society called The Collective. The inhabitants of this modern world are a new breed of humans called Equals. Equals are peaceful, calm, fair and polite. Life in The Collective is perfect; there is no greed, no poverty, no violence and no emotion but a new disease is threatening everyone. SOS, or Switched On Syndrome, is activating in its victims everything they thought they had escaped: depression, sensitivity, fear & love. Once a person is overtaken with SOS, they are sent away to The Den and never seen again. When Silas is infected, he becomes an outcast but he notices one person who seems to understand what he’s going through. Nia (Stewart) has feelings, but she seems to be able to hide them. When he confronts her, they discover a connection that quickly takes over everything. They feel love and intimacy for the first time in their lives but the only way for them to ensure their survival is to escape.
