Mysterio Spider-Man: Far From Home

Is Mysterio Working With S.H.I.E.L.D. In Spider-Man: Far From Home?

In the last week, we’ve heard speculation that the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home will see Peter Parker team up with a rejuvenated S.H.I.E.L.D., and there’s certainly some sense to this claim. Nick Fury and Maria Hill clearly have some purpose to serve in Spidey’s next standalone film, but more importantly, some fans have looked at the design of the character’s new stealth suit and found signs that the outfit may have been given to him by this secretive organization. Nonetheless, a new theory argues that it isn’t Peter but rather his next antagonist Mysterio who’s collaborating with S.H.I.E.L.D. and that it will be up to the web-slinger to expose him for the villain he is.

Nick Fury and Maria Hill clearly have some purpose to serve in Spidey’s next standalone film, but more importantly, fans have looked at the design of the character’s new stealth suit and found signs that the outfit may have been given to him by this secretive organization. Nonetheless, a new theory argues that it isn’t Peter but rather his next antagonist Mysterio who’s collaborating with S.H.I.E.L.D., and that it’ll be up to the web-slinger to expose him for the villain he is.

For evidence, Reddit user Meme_abstinent looks to a recent set video which shows Jake Gyllenhaal kneeling on the ground while several black cars pull up behind him in a very S.H.I.E.L.D.-like manner. The post argues that if the people seen arriving really are agents working with Peter to bring down Mysterio, they sure seem in no hurry to come out of their cars and grab the criminal. From this, the Redditor infers that the agents here don’t see Mysterio as any kind of threat, but rather an ally or even a colleague.

Drawing from the comics, as well the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Meme_abstinent also observes that it’s generally uncharacteristic for Peter to work for a major organization like S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead, the user suggests that maybe his stealth suit wasn’t given to him by the agency, but was rather made by him to do some sneaking around while remaining undetected by S.H.I.E.L.D. The user backs up their idea with a few more points, too, and while there are certainly counterarguments to be made towards this theory, the general idea still seems fairly plausible, if not necessarily probable.

Either way, we’ll find out just who’s working for who when Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out on July 5th, 2019.
