Tom Cruise toes the line between life and death in the latest, downright spooky TV spot for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.

Coming to us by way of the film’s Twitter account (via CBM), the all-too-brief promo doubles down on Nick Morton’s (Cruise) close brush with death. In fact, after his military plane goes down in spectacular fashion, Tom Cruise’s lead wakes up in the morgue, and it seems he’s developed an inexplicable connection to the long-lost Princess Ahmanet. After eons spent buried underground, and one crude awakening later, Sofia Boutella’s deity prepares to unleash her wrath upon the unsuspecting masses, and it’s up to Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), Sgt. Vail (Jake Johnson), Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) and the team of Prodigium to confront that ancient evil head on.

Perhaps what’s most exciting of all is the fact that The Mummy is poised to jump-start Universal’s shared Monsters Universe, and though the actual order of those creature features is yet to be determined, the studio is beginning to make headway on standalone pics featuring Frankenstein (Javier Bardem), the Invisible Man (Johnny Depp), and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the latter of which recently enlisted Aquaman scribe Will Beall. It’s an exciting time in the realm of classic movie monsters, but if nothing else, those early plans only lump more pressure on The Mummy‘s burly shoulders. Can Alex Kurtzman’s revival turn out to be a box office hit? Time will tell.

Expect The Mummy to cast a looming shadow over theatres worldwide on June 9th. Alex Kurtzman’s reboot finds itself sandwiched between Wonder Woman and Pixar threequel Cars 3, so it’ll be interesting to discover how his mythical redo fares within such a crowded corridor.
