Animated features notwithstanding, after bouncing from historical epic Free State of Jones to Gold to The Dark Tower, Matthew McConaughey could be forgiven for wanting to break free from heady drama for a moment or two to dabble in other genres. Well, according to Variety, the Oscar-winner has lined up just the tonic: a stoner comedy by the name of The Beach Bum.
News comes to us just as Berlin’s European Film Market swings into motion, where Rocket Science will launch international sales of The Beach Bum. Written and directed by Harmony Korine of Spring Breakers fame, the light-hearted romp follows a rebellious and loveable rogue called Moondog, who tends to live life large. An official statement from LeGrisbi Productions’ John Lesher showers praise on the film’s originality, stating: “In The Beach Bum, Harmony has crafted the perfect movie for our dark and serious time — a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy that only he could create.”
Though Lesher’s statement goes on to highlight the “incredible team of acting, directing and producing talent,” there’s currently no mention of who will be joining Matthew McConaughey in front of the cameras. Principal photography is earmarked for a July start, so we fully expect to catch wind of more details sooner rather than later.
Assuming the pieces fall into place, The Beach Bum will likely open in theaters during the early stages of 2018. The Dark Tower, meanwhile, is set to arrive on July 28th, 2017 after being pushed out of its initial February release slot.
