‘Suicide Squad’ director shares unseen image of Jared Leto’s Joker looking like a ‘Sgt. Pepper’ reject

What are we, some kind of lonely hearts band?

With James Gunn having reiterated for the umpteenth time that the SnyderVerse is dead, it won’t be sold off to Netflix, and it’s time for the vocal backers to move on with their lives, David Ayer’s mythical original cut of Suicide Squad seems well-placed to take its place as the in-demand abandoned DCU project of choice.

Even though we’re closing in on seven years since the theatrical edition went down in flames as the franchise’s worst-reviewed movie ever – a title it won’t be letting go of anytime soon if Gunn and Safran’s Chapter 1 – Gods & Monsters manages to live up to the hype – the filmmaker continues to state the case for being given a second bite at the cherry.

Anyone with even a passing interest in Suicide Squad is completely aware that the end product was taken out of Ayer’s hands and bastardized by the grubby hands of the Warner Bros. brass, but that hasn’t done a thing to see Jared Leto’s divisive Joker painted in a more flattering light.

Furthering that sentiment, the End of Watch architect dropped a new unseen behind the scenes image, which makes it look as though the Clown Prince of Crime is putting himself forward to become part of a Beatles tribute act.

There was a brief flurry of unfounded scuttlebutt claiming that Leto could be on his way back to the DCU after his cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League proved to be significantly better than his contributions to Suicide Squad, but that door is almost definitely closed now. On the plus side, at least we know he’d fit the bill if he ever wanted to take a shot at a concept album.
