Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter dropped an S-shaped bombshell: Henry Cavill will no longer play the part of Clark Kent/Superman, sending the Internet into a tizzy of conflicting reports and mass confusion.

Amid the furore, it was confirmed that Warner Bros. will now focus its energies into the Supergirl origin movie from writer Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox), and today we’re learning that Brainiac has been earmarked as Kara Zor-El’s big bad.

That’s according to industry tipster ‘DanielRPK’, who claims that, at least for now, Uziel is plotting a big-screen clash between Supergirl and Brainiac, arguably one of the most famous villains in all of Superman lore.

Via Twitter:

The mere mention of Brainiac will no doubt evoke memories of Superman Lives, Tim Burton’s doomed comic book movie that had Kevin Smith on script duties and Nicolas Cage in the title role. Alas, the film was grounded indefinitely before production could begin, leaving many to wonder what could’ve been.

But like all Internet rumors concerning the DC Extended Universe, we’d advise taking this nugget with a grain of salt, as the planned Supergirl spinoff is still gestating in the very early stages of development, and therefore won’t be ready to unveil any tangible information for quite some time.

The Supergirl origin movie is yet to nail down an official release window, what with Warner Bros. firmly focused on the likes of Aquaman, Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984. What’s more, only three DC projects are expected to go before the cameras in 2019 – namely The Batman, The Flash and Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey – so don’t hold your breath for Kara Zor-El’s big-screen debut just yet.
