'Crater' on Disney Plus

The Disney film the House of Mouse mysteriously refused to promote is winning hearts with how ‘depressing’ it is

It is earning the deserved spotlight Disney refused to give it.

Disney is nothing if not over-reliant on how much it likes to go out of its way to promote its films and shows. So, when it opted to ditch all the flaunting for its silently released sci-fi adventure film, Crater, it was bound to raise serious concerns that it is probably so bad that even the House of Mouse is ashamed of it. But based on the reviews from the Disney Plus subscribers, it is nothing but the company having overconfidence in its content, and for good reason.

Released on May 12, Crater stars Mckenna Grace, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Billy Barratt, Thomas Boyce, Orson Hong, and Scott Mescudi as a group of teenagers who embark on an adventure to explore an unknown crater on the moon. While the story sounds all dandy, the finer plot points and specifically the ending of the film have the tendency to escalate the waterworks (kickstarted by Netflix officially becoming the “place where shows die” with another fantasy cancelation).

While Crater hasn’t managed to garner much love in terms of critic reviews, viewers are showering it with appreciation for its moving storyline and its superpower to reduce anyone to a puddle of never-ending tears.

While Crater never received the pre-spotlight it rightfully deserved, Disney just got re-crowned as the creator of the best sci-fi films ever thanks to the film.

If nothing, it just triple underlines the need to value good writing as it can make or break a film’s potential for success.

So, in case, you are one of those whose faith in Disney has been dwindling for some time now, perhaps sobbing through Crater is all you need to renew your faith.
