Some Theories About 10 Cloverfield Lane: Sequel, Prequel, Spin-Off, Or New Idea Altogether?

Our own Matt Donato has some theories about 10 Cloverfield Lane and where it could possibly go - do you agree with any?

5) John Goodman’s Character Is The One Who Discovers Cloverfield… Long Before New York City

This theory goes the whole “John Goodman discovers something wild, no one listens, and he hides before things go South” route. It’s kind of a follow-up on my second point, but with a twist. A few different details brought me here.

For one, “Cloverfield” is nothing but a codename for the monster, but why give it that name? Who would name it such? Someone with a connection to the word, obviously, so if Goodman’s address is 10 Cloverfield Lane in this new movie, it makes perfect sense that the government would somehow contact him about a discovery. Is it the early forms of a Clover baby? A different one than the blur we see rocketing into the ocean at the end of Cloverfield?

Also grabbing my attention is the barrel above, which appears to be either frozen (the gloves) or containing something official like. A hazard sticker can be seen on the outside, suggesting something scientific. Whether Goodman is supposed to have it or not (he probably shouldn’t), this could very well be the beginning of the Cloverfield mythos, and they’re underground because Goodman is worried about what’s about to follow. Maybe there was an original incident with Clover-type creatures, and we finally get to see where Cloverfield got its top-secret name?

Damn government conspiracies holding the truth from us! The more I think about this scenario, the more I think it’s realistic, though. Everyone gets an origin story these days – why not Clover?
