The latest issue of Game Informer has revealed that the Vita will get an Assassin’s Creed III game this year but it will not be a port of the console version, as was rumored in a recent retailer listing. Instead, the Vita game will be a semi-prequel to ACIII, titled Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.

Liberation has gamers play as a female assassin named Aveline and is set in New Orleans between 1765 and 1780, the period just after the French and Indian War up to the middle of the American Revolutionary War. Because Liberation‘s timeline overlaps with ACIII‘s the two game’s stories will tie together in some way and it is said that Aveline will meet up with Connor during the course of the game. The name of the modern day protagonist that will be in the Animus is currently unknown, but it will not be Desmond because he has no genetic connection to Aveline.

The game world is described as “large gameplay areas, where you can run, climb, fight, and explore the entirety of New Orleans without loading a new area.” Additionally, at some point players will travel across the Gulf and into Mexico but the article did not mention how large that game world would be.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation is in development by Ubisoft Sofia and is due out on October 30th, the same day as the console versions of Assassin’s Creed III.

More information on Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation is expected next week during E3, so look for more on the title in our coverage of the expo.
