Talking to VG247 at E3, Cliff Bleszinski said that he’s “really excited” that class-based multiplayer will be coming to the Gears of War franchise for the first time in Gears of War: Judgement, but he also reassured old-time players that the tactics from the former games will still be viable in the new title.

“In previous iterations, the best way to play Gears was to roll around and wall bounce and shotgun people in the face and that’s cool, you can still do that. But I’m getting a little bit older, my reaction times aren’t quite as good as the 19-year-olds out there and I’d like to be able to contribute to the sort of team-based games in different ways”

As someone who grew somewhat weary of the very tactics mentioned above, the possibility of a deeper multiplayer experience is an exciting prospect. It will be interesting to see just how the classes will manage to distinguish themselves within a franchise built upon frenetic ‘roll-and-gun’ action, and whether or not the diverse enemy types that the series has spawned will give rise to some rather unique specializations.

Launching next year on the Xbox 360, Gears of War: Judgement is looking like it will be a rather potent prequel.
