A California man was involved in a tense police chase after driving a U-Haul truck that had allegedly been reported stolen. Video footage showed officers surrounding the vehicle with weapons drawn as they attempted to detain the driver. The man later expressed fear that he might be shot, and the incident sparked debate online about whether the police response was excessive or justified.
Videos of the incident were uploaded to the man’s TikTok profile, myselfedx. While many viewers criticized the officers’ handling of the encounter, others argued that police had legitimate reasons to exercise caution when responding to reports of a stolen vehicle.
Much of the footage was recorded by a bystander. It showed the man raising his hands as officers gave him directions during the confrontation. He eventually went down on his knees before officers handcuffed him. The man reportedly told officers that the paperwork for the rental was inside the vehicle, but he appeared frustrated that they were not listening to him.
The comments were left divided regarding the police’s response
A subsequent update showed the man no longer in handcuffs, recording himself at the scene while officers remained nearby and spoke with others. The update indicated he was unharmed after the frightening encounter, although the full circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
The confrontation divided viewers, with many directing their frustration toward the rental company. One commenter wrote, “Can’t blame the police, but U-Haul is about to get sued big time. Congratulations on your new house.” Others questioned why so many officers appeared to be involved in detaining one man. Some viewers also criticized thke officers for allegedly failing to speak with him before confronting him, arguing that the situation could have been handled differently.
As the videos circulated, viewers urged the creator to share more about what happened before the encounter. Several asked him to post an explanation, hoping to understand how a routine rental allegedly escalated into an armed police confrontation. The police and U-Haul have not yet responded to the incident.
U-Haul vehicles have been involved in several crimes in California. According to a Department of Justice record, Brendan Munro Thompson, also known as Bella Thompson and Bella Castillo, 26, was charged by criminal complaint with the federal crime of assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon. The charges allege Thompson accelerated a U-Haul truck toward several United States Coast Guard (USCG) personnel on October 23, 2025.
Additionally, KTLA 5 reported that a pursuit involving burglary suspects in a U-Haul took a dramatic turn when two people bailed out and climbed into a waiting sedan, triggering a miles-long chase through Los Angeles that ended in a crash in Hyde Park in January this year. In another case this year, Bakersfield police reported they were identifying a suspect connected to a U-Haul and an identity theft incident from late March.
