Husband says he’s done tiptoeing around his wife’s mom after one meltdown reportedly pushed him over the edge: ‘I reached my limit’

And it all started with an innocent kale salad.

A couple’s cheap living arrangement has reportedly fallen apart over a bag of kale salad. A 23-year-old husband says he has decided to move out of his mother-in-law’s home after a heated argument pushed him past his breaking point, according to a Reddit post by u/Ok_General_7169.

According to the Redditor, things started fine, with the newlyweds apparently living there after she offered them a place for $300 a month plus groceries. However, the living situation quickly soured as he said his mother-in-law became explosively angry and falsely claimed they didn’t contribute to the household. The tension reportedly boiled over on a Sunday when his wife ate a small portion of kale salad from the fridge.

His wife reportedly tried to ask her mother first but got no response, so she ate less than half and put the rest back. The mother-in-law’s reaction was apparently immediate and intense. He claimed she threw the salad bag on the floor near the couple’s room and screamed at his wife, calling her an animal, a b****, and other names.

He reportedly finally snapped when she turned on him

The husband said he usually avoids their arguments and stayed quiet at first. Things reportedly escalated when the mother-in-law threatened to go to his wife’s workplace after the wife said she could not talk while being yelled at. When she allegedly turned on him and demanded they “get our s*** together,” he says he “reached his limit.”

He says he told her to f*** off and called her reaction over a salad insane, telling her they pay rent, clean, buy groceries, fix things around the house, and help with the pets. He claimed he confronted her about her constant anger and how she is pushing everyone away.

The couple reportedly left the house shortly after the confrontation so he could calm down. He later spoke with his dad and decided they would move back into a condo he was already helping to pay for. Living with in-laws has sparked similar fights online, with one woman claiming her husband gave his mother her craft room.

The situation then reportedly grew more complicated, as the mother-in-law allegedly sent his wife a long message without a real apology. Instead, she apparently blamed them for not helping enough and claimed they had skipped August rent. However, he said they had accidentally paid twice in July and asked her to apply the second payment to August.

The husband also said he learned from his 15-year-old brother-in-law that the mother-in-law called her ex-husband that same Sunday. She allegedly asked him to make the husband leave, saying she felt uncomfortable. When the ex-husband refused, she reportedly threatened to call the police.

He said he wasn’t being threatening or doing anything illegal, as he was already packing to leave. However, he remains concerned that police involvement could create problems for him. He admitted that telling his mother-in-law to “f*** off” was likely not the best approach, but said he had to stand up for his wife.

Living with family to save money has become far more common, as a quarter of U.S. adults ages 25 to 34 lived in a multigenerational household in 2021, according to Pew Research Center. That figure was just 9% in 1971. Pew also found that financial issues are a major reason why adults live in multigenerational households.

Commenters appear largely supportive of the couple, with many labeling the mother-in-law as abusive. Some suggested warning the wife’s workplace in case she tries to sabotage her job. Food has sparked similar household fights online, including a post where a husband gave away meal prep to his sister. The couple is expected to move back into the condo he helps pay for, which would likely end their $300 rent arrangement with the mother-in-law for good.
