John Legend is gearing up to release his first album in three years, Darkness and Light, early next month on December 2nd. Already available is the lead single, “Love Me Now” – a poppy R&B track that’s currently at number 24 on the Mainstream radio charts. What debuts today shows off a funkier side to the record though, as “Penthouse Floor” features a guest appearance from artist Chance the Rapper.

The song is optimistic and uplifting with lyrics that could be interpreted as not letting anything stop you from reaching the top. Considering Sia is the master of these kinds of messages, it makes sense that she happens to be one of the co-writers on the track. However, it’s nothing like something you’d typically see from the “The Greatest” star – “Penthouse Floor” is pretty unique even for Legend’s standards. Chance the Rapper fits right in, though, as his verse is surrounded by some gorgeous choir-esque vocals.

Darkness and Light is set to feature a wide array of collaborators, but “Penthouse Floor” appears to be the only one including a hip-hop artist. With songs featuring Miguel and Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, it seems like John Legend’s upcoming effort is going to be a late contender for one of the best of the year.
