Matt Gaetz reviews Pete Hegseth’s financial disclosures. Then he finds a link between Hegseth’s wife and a $66 billion contractor

'Wives of Cabinet members shouldn't be paid by lobbyists.'

Matt Gaetz is putting pressure on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following the discovery of financial ties between Hegseth’s wife and a major defense contractor. Gaetz pointed out that Jennifer Hegseth received payments from a consulting firm that worked for Lockheed Martin, a company that secured over $66 billion in government funding during the 2025 fiscal year, the International Business Times reports.

Gaetz shared his concerns on X on Wednesday, 4 November. He wrote, “I’m a former member of the House Armed Services Committee. If Lloyd Austin’s wife was working for a lobbying firm while he was leading the Pentagon, I would have exposed the wrongdoing. Wives of Cabinet members shouldn’t be paid by lobbyists, @SecWar.”

The financial connection involves a firm called Watchtower Strategy. Financial disclosures show Jennifer Hegseth received consulting income from this group, though the specific amount remains private. Records indicate Lockheed Martin was a client of Watchtower in 2025, which also happened to be Hegseth’s first year in office. The Pentagon represented 63 per cent of Lockheed’s sales for that year.

Watchtower Strategy launched shortly after Hegseth was sworn in on January 25, 2025

The firm is chaired by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and provides communication services and strategic advice. While at the time of the launch the firm announced that it would not engage in lobbying, its current client list and the exact nature of Jennifer Hegseth’s ongoing work there remain unclear.

A spokesperson for Watchtower stated, “Jen has assisted us in navigating conservative TV media and we appreciate her help. She has not interfaced with any clients nor does she provide any advice to Watchtower on defense matters.” The firm declined to confirm whether she is still employed there, and Lockheed Martin has not clarified if the company is still a client.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended the situation, stating, “Secretary Hegseth and his wife are in full compliance with all ethics laws and regulations, and their sole focus is serving our warfighters, President Trump, and the American people.” Parnell also mentioned that the department works to screen senior leaders from matters involving private interests or former employers.

Jennifer Hegseth has maintained a high profile since her husband’s confirmation process, where she was seen at meetings with various senators. Her presence at the Pentagon has drawn attention before. In August, reports surfaced that she attended a meeting with British defense officials. While questions were raised regarding whether she held a security clearance, the Pentagon stated she was only there for introductions and left before any classified information was discussed.

The scrutiny surrounding Hegseth comes at a time when his position within the administration appears uncertain. Sources have indicated that President Donald Trump has been consulting with advisers about whether Hegseth should remain in his role, although the President denied rumors of a replacement on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, political challenges are mounting. Representative Thomas Massie has filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth, citing allegations related to the War Powers Resolution and the conflict in Iran. With Democrats set to take control of the House in January, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has previously suggested his party would seek to remove Hegseth from his position.
