A delivery driver has been accused of throwing a coffee cup at a woman in Las Vegas after she confronted him and accused the driver of attempting to steal her beverage. In a viral TikTok the customer posted online, the man is seen throwing the drink from his vehicle before driving away.
TikToker Karmen Karma shared the video of the delivery driver, whose name she said was Darian. On November 3, she claimed that Darian had not delivered her order and had attempted to steal it. In the description, she said that the man had delivered the coffee to her front door, taken a photo, and then left with the cup still in his hand. Couriers can be instructed to take photographs of the food at the front door as proof of delivery.
Karmen also shared a video that appeared to show the courier putting the coffee down outside the front door before picking it up.
Darian then allegedly tried to drive off with the coffe but turned his vehicle into a cul-de-sac and got stuck. He then drove back past Karmen and is heard saying to her, “I don’t want your $4 coffee,” before throwing the cup at the woman who claimed she was standing with her two small children next to her.
Karmen tagged Postmates, and its parent company, Uber Eats. Uber has not yet addressed the accusations made by Karmen in her video. However, the coffee shop she bought the beverage from, Mothership Coffee, did respond, offering her a $50 gift card. Karmen also specified that her coffee was not $4 but rather it was $19.70.
Delivery services and driver policy
Policies regarding driver behavior can vary depending on the platform that they are delivering with. Services such as UberEats instruct drivers to treat others with respect. According to the community guidelines on the UberEats site, drivers and anyone using the service are expected to “Treat everyone in the Uber community as you would like to be treated yourself.” The guidelines also state that “Aggressive, confrontational, or harassing behaviour is not allowed.”
Penalties for failing to adhere to the Uber guidelines can also see couriers lose access to their account depending on the severity of the transgression.
The Uber website also encourages users to inform the company if they had any uncomfortable experiences or an “unsafe experience with a delivery person.” Users can log in and lodge their complaints via the app or on the website. They can also report missing or stolen food by logging into their account and letting Uber know about missing food items within 48 hours to potentially receive a refund.
