Palatine teen allegedly plots mass shooting at an Aurora Hindu place of worship. Police raid his home and find a dangerous manifesto

Where hate leads you.

Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old resident of Palatine, was arrested after authorities uncovered an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area in Illinois, Deccan Herald reports. The investigation into this alarming situation began when the Mount Prospect Police Department reached out to the Palatine Police Department regarding information about a potential attack. This tip originated from an individual who reported receiving concerning electronic communications.

Detectives moved quickly to investigate the claims, which led them to a self-titled document attributed to Paporakis. This document, titled Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora shooter’s manifesto), allegedly contained white supremacist and extremist content. According to the police, the text included references to violence directed towards individuals of South Asian heritage, specifically those of Indian descent. Beyond the document, investigators discovered that Paporakis had shared images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armor, and various pieces of tactical gear.

The Palatine Police Department executed a search warrant at the residence of the accused, where they recovered a significant amount of concerning material. Among the items seized were a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of rounds of additional ammunition, and tactical equipment. Police also found a tactical vest containing body armor adorned with a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.

The mass shooting plan was thwarted thanks to the police’s quick action

Paporakis now faces one count each of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons, specifically a rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches in length. He appeared for a detention hearing on Wednesday at the Cook County Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows, where a judge ordered him to be detained. He is scheduled to return to court on October 30 for further proceedings.

While detectives believe Paporakis may have been planning to carry out an attack on Sunday, October 11, they noted that the specific intended location has not been confirmed and remains under investigation.

The Aurora Police Department has taken proactive steps by coordinating outreach to Hindu places of worship under their jurisdiction to ensure they are aware of the situation. This incident occurs during a time of Hindu festivals, including Navaratri, and follows the recent vandalism of the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Ohio.

The Hindu American Foundation addressed the situation on X, stating, “We commend law enforcement for swift action. We also urge the community to stay vigilant and report any potential threat. Every community deserves to worship without fear.”

Palatine Police Chief William Nord emphasized the gravity of the situation in a statement. “The seriousness of this alleged threat cannot be overstated. Through the immediate sharing of information and coordinated response by the Palatine and Mount Prospect Police Departments, officers were able to identify and take the suspect into custody,” Nord said. “Protecting our communities and places of worship remains a priority, and we will continue working with our law enforcement partners as this investigation moves forward.”

The Palatine Police Department is currently working closely with the FBI as the investigation remains active. Authorities are still reviewing the potential for additional charges, though they have stated there is no known ongoing threat to the public associated with this incident.

FBI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Ryan Whalen added, “The agency aggressively works alongside its local and state law enforcement partners to identify, investigate, and dismantle any threats of violence driven by radical ideologies.”
