Pennsylvania woman had never eaten a baked potato in her life. Then a coworker told her about Wendy’s: ‘This is insane to me’

Life-changing experience.

A Pennsylvania woman’s TikTok video about trying a baked potato for the first time in her life has been getting a lot of attention online. In the video, posted on the account @ketchupgirl63, the woman shares how she went her entire life without ever tasting a baked potato, only to discover Wendy’s version as an adult and become completely hooked on it.

The woman explains in the TikTok video that her first-ever baked potato was from Longhorn Steakhouse, just a few months before she posted the clip. After trying it, she says she could not stop thinking about having another one. But she did not want to go back to a sit-down restaurant just for a side dish. That is when a coworker stepped in with a tip that changed things for her.

@Wendy’s what are you putting in your baked potato’s I’m genuinely addicted. GUYS, I have made a baked potato at home numerous times and I still don’t think it’s as good.

“I recently tried a baked potato for the first time a few months ago and I was telling my coworker how I wasn’t able to stop thinking about having a baked potato,” she says in the video. Her coworker told her that Wendy’s carries baked potatoes, something the woman had no idea about. She called the discovery “insane to me.”

Wendy’s has been selling baked potatoes since before she was probably born

A few weeks later, at Wendy’s, she swapped her usual fries for the bacon and cheese baked potato. She says it was “one of the best things” she had ever tasted and that she has since not gone a single week without going back for at least one.

The item she stumbled upon is not new. Wendy’s first put baked potatoes on the menu in October 1983, making it one of the longest-running sides in fast food history. The chain introduced them during a period when health-conscious eating was becoming more popular in America.

A plain baked potato has around 270 calories, compared to up to 470 calories for fries, which made it an easy sell to customers looking for a lighter option. The bacon and cheese version she tried, however, comes in at 440 calories, with a mix of carbs, fat, and protein, and is topped with Applewood smoked bacon and a cheddar cheese sauce made with real cheddar, butter, and several flavor-enhancing ingredients. It currently starts at around $5.79, a long way from its early days as a 99-cent menu staple.

What makes Wendy’s unique in this space is that it is essentially the only major fast food chain in the United States that still serves baked potatoes. The reason comes down to how the item is made. Workers wrap each potato in foil and bake it in a convection oven for a full hour.

That kind of time investment has kept competitors away. Burger King and Carl’s Jr. tried it in the past but dropped it. Arby’s offers it at some locations in Canada and a handful of spots in the US, but Wendy’s is the only chain to carry it consistently, nationwide. It is not the first time a fast food order has gone viral, either, as a late-night McDonald’s run that turned into a DIY fish fillet meal also recently got people talking online.

The numbers show how popular the item still is. According to Reader’s Digest, Wendy’s sells around one million baked potatoes every week in the United States. The bacon and cheese potato, along with the chili and cheese version, are among the most ordered. Food fans on TikTok have also turned the item into a trend of its own, with countless videos showing hacks like pouring a side of Wendy’s chili directly onto the bacon cheese potato for a loaded version.

The woman in the video does have one complaint. She says that if Wendy’s salted the skin of the potato, it would be the best thing she had ever eaten. That specific gripe is actually a common one among fans online, who frequently mention the unseasoned skin as the one thing they wish Wendy’s would address.

Her reaction, while striking to many viewers, fits into a broader pattern on TikTok where people are discovering or rediscovering the Wendy’s baked potato and posting about it. TikTok has become a regular space for these kinds of food discoveries, much like when a man who visited an empty restaurant went viral after sharing his experience and sending crowds to the place.

Several other creators have posted similar first-reaction videos with comments like “I can’t believe I was sleeping on these baked potatoes” and “Wendy’s has baked potatoes? WHAT?” The item has been on the menu for over 40 years, yet a portion of the population is still finding out about it for the first time.
