Sorry Ezra Miller, ‘The Flash’ early reactions confirm Sasha Calle’s Supergirl steals the show

Move over Ezra Miller - it seems that 'The Flash' star has been outshined by Sasha Calle's incredible performance as Supergirl

The latest trailer for The Flash dropped yesterday and it’s left plenty of DC fans excited about the upcoming film. While the movie’s star Ezra Miller has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, they’ve still been getting praised for their great acting. However, it’s not the titular character’s performance that’s generating the most buzz after yesterday’s trailer drop and early previews. That accolade belongs to Sasha Calle, who’s taken on the role of Supergirl.

The Flash takes place in an alternate reality, caused by Barry Allen traveling back in time to save his mother from being killed. In this different universe, Batman is a little more unhinged than we’re used to (which is saying something), there’s a Dark Flash on the loose — a character who’s analogous to the famous Flash villain, Reverse Flash — and there’s no Superman. There is, however, a Supergirl, and it appears that Calle has killed it in the role of a Kryptonian castaway.

Early viewers are also loving Michael Keaton reprising his role as the Caped Crusader — although he’s not the only Dark Knight in the film, with Ben Affleck’s version of the superhero also playing a big part in the plot.

The new film is said to have so many Easter eggs that it might as well have been produced by a bunny, which should appease fans who have been criticizing various aspects of The Flash before it’s even had its first screenings. While the CGI and general art direction seem to be leaving a lot to be desired, the actual content of the film has been getting the highest praise from some very influential people. And, considering how much comic book fandoms (both Marvel and DC) like to complain that the films are becoming cash grabs that are mostly style over substance, this focus on storytelling should be considered a positive, even if some of the shots aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as people would like. Add in great performances, like Miller and Calle appear to have given, and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

Fans of Barry Allen can also take heart from the fact that new DC boss James Gunn seems to be completely enamored with the film, which means that elements of it might even be pulled through to his reboot of the franchise (subtitled “Monsters and Gods.”). With The Flash out in just over a month, audiences will soon see if all this hype is just excellent marketing or a true yardstick of just how good the latest film is. At the very least, they’ve got the fan service right, and potentially a new fan favorite in Supergirl.
