The animated show South Park announced Tuesday that it’s officially changing its program’s name to “South America,” The Hill reported. Co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone stated they were “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google” in making this decision.
This name change is a pretty direct jab, mirroring President Trump’s recent efforts to rename geographical landmarks. Last year, President Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Then, in August, he followed up with another executive order to formally change Lake Ontario’s name to “Lake America.” Apple Maps and Google Maps immediately started showing these new names for both bodies of water.
Parker and Stone didn’t stop there with their statement. They also took a shot at their own parent company, Paramount, calling it “a Skydance Capitulation.” This refers to the massive $8 billion merger deal between Paramount and Skydance that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved last year. That approval came after Paramount settled a lawsuit brought by President Trump for $16 million.
This isn’t the first time South Park has weighed in on contemporary politics
The show’s creators were pretty critical of these moves in the program’s 27th season. The season premiere, for instance, depicted the president in bed with Satan. That episode also showed President Trump constantly screaming and threatening to sue other characters for hurting his feelings or defying him. Other administration officials, like Brendan Carr, who chairs the FCC, also made an appearance in the episode.
The show’s official Instagram account got in on the fun earlier this week, too. After South Park won an Emmy for ‘Outstanding Animated Program,’ the account posted a picture on Monday mocking the president. The image showed an animated Trump character with his pants down, holding an Emmy. The text accompanying the image was short and sweet, saying, “You finally got your Emmy.”
President Trump was actually nominated for an Emmy twice during his time on NBC’s The Apprentice. He got nominations in 2004 and 2005, but unfortunately for him, he lost both times to CBS’s The Amazing Race.
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on South Park’s latest announcement.
