Now that its new console has been officially revealed, Nintendo has revealed a detailed list of specs for the Wii U. It confirms early rumors which stated the device would be capable of outputting full HD 1080p visuals. This will be done through an HDMI output option, which is something most Nintendo fans will be extremely happy to hear about. Who hasn’t wanted to see their trademark colour palette pop in full HD? I know I have.
Along with the revealed details regarding its video definition output capabilities, Nintendo also mentioned that its AV Multi-Out port can output a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p feed via composite video, S-video, component video, or HDMI, along with six-channel linear PCM audio over HDMI. Its slot loading disc drive will use “12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs” (not Blu-ray or DVD discs,) with backwards compatibility for your Wii game collection.
The powerful unit is about 10.5 inches (268.5 mm) long, 6.8 inches (172 mm) wide, and 1.8 inches (46 mm) deep.
Wii U’s new touchscreen controller (simply referred to as the New Controller by Nintendo,) will in fact have a rechargeable battery, meaning it will ship with an AC charging cord. To go along with its touchscreen, it will also feature a sensor bar, though no further details were given regarding that. It could perhaps be located where the device’s front-facing camera is positioned, at the top of the controller. There’s a black strip there, with the tiny camera in the middle of it.
It was also revealed that the Wii U will have four USB slots, as well as flash memory (though there’s no confirmed amount at this time.) Like its predecessor, its storage capabilities will be expandable with SD memory cards or an external hard drive. The system’s CPU is an IBM Power-based multi-core processor, but Nintendo has not yet released further details regarding it.
