Woman walks into Walmart for a snack and realizes the price of Krispy Kreme has doubled. Then she reveals what she did instead: ‘It’s not normal’

Path of least resistance.

Grocery store prices have climbed to a point where even a simple snack run can feel like a hit to your budget. Many people remember a time when you could grab a treat and a drink without worrying about the final total at the register. Inflation has touched everything from potato chips to soda, making it difficult to keep a snack under $5.

One shopper recently hit her limit during a trip to Walmart, where she encountered a price for Krispy Kreme doughnuts that left her stunned, BroBible reports. The shopper, a TikTok user named Freya, shared her experience in a video that has gained over 407,000 views.

She stood at a self-checkout terminal and scanned an 8-pack of Krispy Kreme mini doughnuts. The screen showed a price of $9.98 for the package, which works out to more than a dollar for each tiny doughnut. Freya noted that the item was set to expire the very next day. “I ain’t paying no $11 for these old … doughnuts,” she said in the video. “There’s a Krispy Kreme right down the road!”

Instead of completing the purchase, Freya decided to visit a local Krispy Kreme shop to buy a single fresh doughnut

She mentioned that while the single doughnut cost almost $3, she felt the quality made it a better choice. In a follow-up video, she explained that she had not shopped for snacks in a while and was surprised by how much the price had jumped since her last visit.

“The last time I bought an eight count of mini donuts at Walmart it was like $6, so it’s almost double the price now,” she explained. “That absolutely baffled me. The audacity to charge so much for some clumps of dough—like, what is this economy? What is this reality?” She added that she believes people are starting to accept these high costs as if they are standard. “Everybody just seems to be normalizing this,” she said. “It’s not normal.”

Data suggests her frustration is based on a real trend. In June 2020, an 8-pack of Krispy Kreme Mini Crullers was priced under $4. The current price of nearly $10 represents an increase of over 151 percent. This growth far outpaces the cumulative inflation rate of 30.7 percent seen over the same time frame. If the price had only followed general inflation trends, the pack would still cost less than $6.

In an email, Freya noted that the final price after tax reached $10.39. She also mentioned that she has noticed price hikes on other staples, such as beef roasts, which now cost around $25. She stated that neither Walmart nor Krispy Kreme has reached out to her regarding the video.

Other shoppers on TikTok shared their own strategies for avoiding these prices. Some suggested skipping the branded goods and heading straight to the Walmart bakery. One user claimed that a 12-pack of mini doughnuts from the store bakery is often available for under $4. Other viewers pointed out that the Krispy Kreme items in grocery stores are delivered fresh daily from local shops, which might account for the higher cost.

Despite this, many people in the comments agreed that the current pricing feels excessive. One commenter even expressed frustration with the cost of treats at other chains, stating, “I think Dunkin has lost their minds. almost 3 dollars for a mini donut?!?! that’s straight robbing all of us. Ugh.”
