‘You gotta know what’s on the other side of the door before you go in’: Jackée Harry describes working with Harvey Weinstein

It's important to be aware.

We are living in an era of contradictions and dualities. Take Hollywood as an example, where the advocates of gender equality and social inclusivity have to function amidst the rampant culture of discrimination.

While everyone is aware of this reality, actress and television personality Jackee Harry has immaculately summarized the issue, including her encounter with Harvey Weinstein as an instance. Throughout a major portion of the interview, Harry addresses a major dilemma that women face in and out of the industry when they choose to stay true to who they are and “put it out in the world,” but at the same time face the inevitable — that is, to be on the receiving end of discrimination and criticism.

Using examples from her own life, Harry goes on to explain how taking risks and developing a daring attitude has always helped her acquire her goals. What kept her going is her awareness about the troubles along the way which according to her is knowing “what’s on the other side of the door.”

Speaking on the subject, she talked about how Weinstein — who charged with innumerable sexual assaults within the industry, and eventually convicted for rape — offered Harry “a great job” without having tried to make any attempts to molest her. She also spoke about going on an audition at midnight on the producer’s request at a hotel where he was residing, placing her complete trust in her agent in order to do so.

Weinstein’s reputation as a perpetrator is well-known, as countless violent sexual assaults perpetrated by him not only reflected the ongoing sexual discrimination within the industry, but also gave an impetus to the #metoo movement. Harry’s risk-taking habit in this regard proves the varied experiences of people, especially women, some of whom are lucky to escape harassment and assault, while others are forced to bear the burden of exploitation and worse.
