‘You see the face, right?’: D.C. woman freezes after spotting a figure lurking in her back alley at night

Fear of the dark.

A woman from Washington, D.C. recently went viral on TikTok after she spotted what she thought was a mysterious figure lurking in the alleyway behind her home at night. The video, posted by user Janet (@jannit28), shows her peering down the dark alley, her eyes locked on something that looked very much like a human-shaped figure. As she watched, the “creature” appeared to move.

According to Brobible, the clip has racked up over 1.1 million views on TikTok. In the caption, Janet wrote, “I’ve been wearing these contacts all day. My eyes and my brain are tired. This scared the crap out of me,” followed by a laughing emoji. She also added, “You see the face, right?!”

The comment section quickly filled up with users who were equally unsettled by what they saw in the video, with many speculating about what the mysterious figure could be. Some were genuinely convinced that it was something supernatural, while other brushed it off saying it was “someone in a suit” it feels “scooby doo ish”.

Trees fooling tired eyes is more common than people think

In a follow-up TikTok video, Janet went back to the alley during the day to get a closer look, and the truth turned out to be far less scary. The so-called “monster” was simply a tree, swaying gently in the breeze.

Janet explained in the caption that the tree belongs to her neighbor, so she cannot move it. She noted that the way the tree was positioned, combined with her tired eyes, made her mistake it for a human figure standing in the dark. The branches and leaves had come together in a shape that looked eerily human.

This kind of experience is not unique to Janet. On Reddit, users have shared many similar stories of being frightened by what they thought was a mysterious figure, only to find out it was a tree or some other natural object. One user said they saw what looked like a creature with long, spindly legs in the forest, but it turned out to be a tree.

Another Reddit user reported being spooked by what appeared to be a person standing in a tree, which also turned out to be just the natural shape of the tree itself. In other viral moments, people have had equally shocking discoveries, like this woman who felt something moving in her underwear that sent her running to the shower.

Ok, ok, ok… THIS is the monster from the other night. This is the back alley, and as you can see, it’s wide open, so winds come traveling through here, whipping around this corner and that is why the bush looked like it was moving/shivering. The way this all lined up at that moment, the other night, had me screaming and running. How embarrassing because there are cameras all over back here. 😬 Also, did they model the Gilly suit after this bush because look at it, it really does look like a face. 😲 #gilly #bushman #viral #trending #fyp

This happens because the human brain is wired to look for faces and human shapes, even when they are not really there. In low-light conditions, this tendency becomes even stronger, and the brain can easily fill in the gaps with frightening details that are not actually present. So if you are walking alone at night and think you see a figure in the shadows, there is a good chance it might just be a tree or another everyday object playing tricks on your eyes.

Social media has no shortage of people reacting badly to stressful situations, much like a Missouri woman who pulled out a gun over a missing fast food order at a Steak ‘n Shake. Janet’s experience is a funny but relatable reminder of how the dark and a pair of tired eyes can turn something as simple as a backyard tree into a nighttime nightmare.
