Woman allegedly leaves delivery unopened for a week, sure it was niece’s Halloween costume. Then she picks up the box: ‘a little too heavy’

The box did not hold a costume after all.

Fundraiser orders are a common way for relatives to back a child’s sports team, though one buyer’s order appears to have gone to waste. According to a Reddit post by u/Total-Swordfish4670 in r/tifu, the poster left a package unopened in their living room for a full week, assuming it held a Halloween costume. It reportedly contained around $100 worth of cookie dough instead.

The poster explained that they ordered the cookie dough a few weeks earlier to support their nephew’s child’s sports team. Each variety reportedly made 24 cookies and cost $24, and they picked three. According to the poster, after shipping, the total came to around $100, which seems like a big order, though it apparently covered just those three boxes.

Around the same time, the poster apparently bought a Halloween costume for their niece from an online cosplay shop. A medium-sized box reportedly later arrived while they were out, and their partner left it in the living room. According to the poster, since they expected the costume, they assumed it held the outfit and a wig, not cookie dough.

The box turned out to be way too heavy for a costume

The poster says they only picked up the box when it came time to gather everything for their sister, and it felt far too heavy. Inside was reportedly a large thermal foil bag filled with hard, lumpy items. For a moment, they reportedly thought the cosplay shop had scammed them by sending random junk.

It turned out to be three damp boxes of cookie dough and two melted freezer packs, which had likely sat on the living room floor for the full week. The poster said they wasted $100 and called the situation a bummer. However, they also suggested they should have simply donated cash to the team instead.

One commenter appeared to agree, writing, “Always donate cash! That way you know it 100% goes to the team/club/group/troop.” The poster said the commenter was right, as cash would likely have reached the team without any risk of spoiled cookie dough. Package mix-ups tend to draw big reactions online, much like the story of a UPS driver named Rick.

After several people asked about the actual costume, the poster checked their email. Their inbox was reportedly flooded with spam from costume websites they had never heard of, which they believe may mean their email address was sold. However, they also found a tracking number suggesting the real costume has cleared customs and is on its way.

Some replies leaned into the humor of the mix-up. One commenter jokingly suggested the poster eat the costume when it finally arrives. The poster also thanked people for their concern about the missing outfit.

Another commenter advised the poster to open packages and confirm the contents on arrival, regardless of this specific mix-up. “If you’re shopping online (the costume order), you risk having an issue and being outside of the websites return window,” the commenter wrote. Deliveries do not always arrive intact either, as one FedEx driver’s rough handling showed.

The poster said they plan to open deliveries right away from now on to avoid another box of warm cookie dough, and assured the real costume should reach them soon.
