Donald Trump finally admits defeat in E Jean Carroll battle, but his legal team insists ‘President Trump will keep winning’

Donald Trump fought tooth and nail against E. Jean Carroll receiving a $5.5 million payout after a Manhattan jury found him liable for sexually abusing her. At every step of the way, Trump’s legal team attempted to block the payout, and even attempted to claw back the money after it had been paid to her.

Trump protested his innocence throughout, claiming the trial was a “con job”, maintaining he’d “never met” her and arguing, “This Case is really against the United States of America, and all it stands for.”

But now, finally, he’s thrown in the towel. The Guardian reports that Trump has “agreed to stop fighting” over Carroll’s payout. This comes at the end of a string of litigation that concluded with a decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to deny Trump’s lawyers’ pleas. This wasn’t a dramatic reveal, as a recent Supreme Court decision not to reconsider the case left this as a mere formality.

“There’s absolutely no way Trump can go after Carroll”

The report quotes former federal prosecutor Neame Rahmani as saying, “He’d previously given up in district court. Now he’s given up in circuit court. It’s a final nail in the coffin. There’s absolutely no way Trump can go after Carroll for this five million plus dollars.”

Carroll has made clear that she has big plans for Trump’s money and has pledged to donate it to organizations working on women’s reproductive rights, funding campaigns to support voting rights, and to support survivors of sexual assault.

But, on the grand scale of this dispute, $5.5 million is small potatoes. Carroll has also been awarded a colossal $83.3 million by a jury that found Trump liable for defaming Carroll. This payment has already been upheld, but once again, Trump’s lawyers are applying to the Supreme Court in an effort to overturn it. That litigation remains pending.

However, despite multiple judges ruling against Trump and Carroll getting her money, Trump’s legal team is still claiming this as a win. As per The Guardian, they say,  “The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes. President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again.”

But with the weight of precedent firmly behind Carroll, this long-running and furiously fought case might finally be coming to an end. And, whatever spin Trump’s team might attempt, repeatedly losing doesn’t look much like a win.
