Florida Representative Randy Fine appeared on NewsNation this week and laid out a position on citizenship that quickly drew a pointed follow-up from the host. Anchor Nichole Berlie asked him about his stated plan to seek the removal of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar from Congress and to support her deportation if officials determine she was untruthful on her citizenship application.
Berlie then widened the discussion. She asked whether the same level of review should apply to other high-profile immigrants with ties to the administration, specifically naming First Lady Melania Trump and Elon Musk, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Both, she noted, are naturalized citizens.
Fine answered by calling for a broad look backward. He said authorities should re-examine everyone who became a naturalized citizen from 1990 onward, describing the kind of paperwork problems alleged in Omar’s case as widespread in Minnesota.
Fine says the standard should apply to anyone who was not honest on forms
He told Berlie that Omar ought to be the first person examined under that approach. “So yeah, I think Ilhan needs to be the first. She certainly should not be the last,” he said, according to Mediaite. President Donald Trump has also publicly pushed for Omar to be thrown out.
When Berlie asked directly whether the review would also cover the First Lady, Musk, and other well-known immigrants, Fine replied that it should apply to “Anyone who was not honest in their immigration paperwork.” He added that he has no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding either Trump’s or Musk’s naturalization and is not aware of any allegations that they misstated information.
Fine contrasted that with the situation involving Omar. “I don’t know anything about the circumstances of the First Lady or Elon Musk. I don’t know that there’s ever been an allegation, but there are allegations about Ilhan Omar’s citizenship issues going back 10 years that people have refused to look at, in fact coming from the Somali community,” he stated.
He closed the point by saying anyone who lied on their paperwork to obtain citizenship should be denaturalized and deported. The pressure on Omar has grown, with deportation threats against her increasing. Berlie noted that the First Lady arrived on an Einstein visa, then moved the interview to other topics.
