The second Trump administration has seen multiple women resign or be fired from high-profile positions: Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi, Tulsi Gabbard, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Karoline Leavitt and, most recently, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Katie Zacharia.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, ex-wife of prominent Gavin Newsom, former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr and now former US Ambassador to Greece, had a more dramatic downfall than most. A former Trump campaign darling, she was made US Ambassador to Greece around a year ago, a prime job widely considered a reward for her support.
Stories then broke alleging questionable behavior, including text messages showing her asking Trump donor and former Kentucky congressional candidate Eric Deters to pay off roughly $100,000 on her American Express credit card “in a way that wouldn’t leave a paper trail.”
“I just wish her the best”
Guilfoyle apparently knew this didn’t look good, as she admonished Deters for communicating by text as “really dangerous and not helpful to you or me.” Trump was reportedly deeply unhappy when the story broke and asked her to resign, though Guilfoyle says she’s going to “vigorously defend” herself against the allegations.
But now Governor of California Gavin Newsom, her ex-husband in what now seems like another lifetime, has briefly weighed in on his ex’s woes. Per The Daily Mail, a CBS News reporter asked Newsom, “Recently, your ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, was involved in a scandal and pushed out of her ambassadorship. Could you please share what your reaction was to that news?”
Newsom reportedly replied, “I don’t know enough about it. I haven’t talked to her in a while, and I just wish her the best,” before adding that he thought her situation was “unfortunate.”
When they split in 2005, Newsom and Guilfoyle put out a joint statement blaming “the demands of our respective careers” and saying, “Over the past 10 years, we have developed a tremendous bond of love and respect for each other. That will never change. We will remain close friends. We ask for your understanding and consideration during this difficult time.”
More recently, in his 2026 memoir Young Man in a Hurry, Newsom said he was “just going through the motions” before the wedding. The pair have also referenced their ever-growing political divide, with Newsom claiming that Giulfoyle “fell prey to the culture at Fox in a deep way” and Giulfoyle saying Newsom had “fallen prey to the left, the radical left.”
