Pentagon edits dress code, includes weight and grooming standards for Defense Secretary Hegseth’s event: ‘serve as role models’

The Pentagon is currently setting a very specific bar for its upcoming State of the Force address, requiring troops to meet strict waist-to-height requirements and exhibit what officials call “impeccable” grooming standards if they want to attend. This event, which is scheduled for September 30, is a major focus for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as he continues to push his vision for the military.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon is asking commanders to nominate service members who fit these physical standards to attend the speech. The Hill highlighted that the Pentagon is looking for individuals who can serve as “role models for their peers and subordinates.” Therefore, the selection process for the attendees is quite rigorous. 

Nominated candidates must be consistently rated as top performers within their formations and “demonstrate a clear record of integrity, discipline, and selfless service.” These troops need to “demonstrate strong presence, clear communication, and sound judgment under pressure.” However, the new requirements also highlight Hegseth’s focus on presenting an army that meets specific physical fitness and appearance standards. 

Molding the military to a vision

Since taking on his role, he has prioritized these standards, which he believes are critical to improving the military’s ability to fight wars effectively. Reuters noted that Hegseth has been very vocal about his views, even slamming what he describes as fat generals and admirals during a rare gathering of commanders. In that meeting, he expressed that it is completely unacceptable to see such individuals in the halls of the Pentagon.

For those who are ultimately selected to attend the September 30 event, there is an extra incentive, per WSJ. These troops will have the opportunity to work out with the Defense Secretary, provided they show demonstrated leadership quality and professional character. The Hill noted that this initiative aligns with the broader changes Hegseth has been implementing. 

For instance, he has reportedly enforced screening policies for male active-duty and reserve service members over the age of 30, which include checking testosterone levels with blood tests and offering hormone replacement therapy. Female service members are also asked about potential hormonal dysregulation. 

The Hill noted that Hegseth has a specific stated goal for these health-focused initiatives. When announcing the testosterone testing, Hegseth stated in an X video, “This initiative, it’s not about artificial enhancement; it’s about restoring and optimizing your natural capabilities, protecting your longevity, ensuring you have the biological foundation required to sustain and fight.” Of course, Hegseth’s focus on appearance isn’t limited to just physical fitness. 

The Pentagon also rolled out new grooming standards last year, per The Hill. At that point, Hegseth announced, “The grooming standard set by the U.S. military is to be clean shaven and neat in presentation for a proper military appearance.” 

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson, did say that shaving waivers could be obtained through military medical officials. However, the service members’ commander reportedly remains the final approving authority. Additionally, these waivers have impacted some service members’ ability to participate in events. 

Ultimately, all of these efforts tie back to efforts to reshape the Department of Defense into the Department of War. There has been an ongoing drive by the Trump Administration to build the perfect warrior and strong alpha men, a move framed as a sign of American strength per The Hill. The shift reflects the administration’s desire to move away from what they view as the political correctness of the past. 

Hegseth previously noted, per the outlet, “For too long, we have simply not done that. The military has been forced by foolish and reckless politicians to focus on the wrong things.” He further added that his efforts are about fixing decades of decay, some of which he describes as obvious and some as hidden.

While some critics have warned against using troops to advance political priorities or argued that the focus is too narrow, the military is clearly moving forward to meet Hegseth’s strict vision.
