Dick Morris, a longtime political strategist and commentator, appeared on Newsmax Tuesday night during midterm elections coverage, according to Mediaite. He joined host Rob Schmitt and offered a view that Republican setbacks could stem from President Donald Trump performing too well in office. Morris argued that this success is what would feed losses for the party.
Morris previously advised former President Bill Clinton and has served as a Fox News contributor. On the program, he presented an argument that few other commentators were making at the time. He suggested Trump has resolved major problems in a way that reduces the urgency voters once felt about those same issues.
According to Morris, Trump is effectively doing himself out of a job by tackling challenges that once defined the political landscape. He pointed to the southern border, the ability to drill for oil, and the threat from Iran as examples of progress. Morris said that if those problems remained unsolved, Republicans would be cruising to victory instead.
Morris links solved problems to weaker election prospects
Morris explained that voters are currently focused on the inflated price of gas and a little bit of affordability. He acknowledged those concerns but argued that people should pay attention to larger issues that have already been addressed. In his view, the absence of those bigger problems changes how the election is playing out.
He said that if 20 million people were still coming in over the border, if oil drilling remained blocked, and if Iran still posed a nuclear threat, Trump would have no trouble winning. Morris described the current situation as one where those threats have been handled. This, he argued, leaves less for Republicans to run on as pressing crises. Still, polls on Iran and once-loyal voters tell a more complicated story.
During the appearance, Morris laid out his full reasoning in these words: “Tonight, a lot of people are going to be saying that Donald Trump is failing because of the midterms, and if he loses the House and loses the Senate, there’s going to a long line of people blaming him.”
He added: “And we have to realize that if he’s in trouble tonight, it’s because of his own success. If we still have 20 million people coming in over the border, if we still couldn’t drill for oil, if we still face the threat of Iran going nuclear, Trump would have no trouble winning this election. The problem is that he has solved virtually all of the major problems… He’s doing himself out of the job.”
Morris noted that people are likely to blame Trump if Republicans lose the House and the Senate. Some in the MAGA base had already accused Trump of sabotaging the midterms. He pushed back on that framing by tying any trouble to the president’s own record of solving problems. The strategist maintained that success on the border, energy, and Iran has altered the dynamics.
He argued that the major issues have largely been resolved, which creates a different political environment than one filled with open crises. Morris said this outcome means Trump’s achievements are working against the kind of clear advantages that unresolved problems once provided.
